Erected at the behest of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg with a length of 250 meters (850 feet) and a width of 150 meters (492 feet), it is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Hohensalzburg Fortress is situated at an altitude of 506 meters (1,660 feet). Hohensalzburg Fortress celebratedi its 900th anniversary in 1977.
Hours of operation: January through April: 09:30 (9:30 am) to 17:00 (5:00 pm), May through September: 09:00 (9:00 am) to 17:00 (5:00 pm), October through December: 09:30 (9:30 am) to 17:00 (5:00 pm), Advent weekends and Easter: 09:30 (9:30 am) to 18:00 (6:00 pm). Please note: On 24th of December, they are closing at 14:00 (2:00 pm).
Access to the Fortress is not possible by car. The Festungsbahn (funicular) runs every ten minutes and takes you to the castle hilltop in only one minute. It takes about 20 minutes one-way on foot.
You must pay admission to the Fortress to gain access to the Eurocent machines. Cost of admission which includes ascent and descent by the funicular: Adults €12,80, Children €7,30.
Machine 2 is in the main Gift Shop in the main courtyard. Cost to press: a Euro and a 5 cent Eurocent (€1,05) for each design. Designs all have a dotted border:
1. (V) A Rat in armor going to battle with 'Festung Hohensalzburg'.
2. (H) Skyline of Salzburg and the fortress in the background with 'Festung Hohensalzburg'.
3. (V) A fighting knight in armor with 'Festung Hohensalzburg'.
Machine 3 is just inside the entrance to the puppet museum.Cost to press: 2 Euro for each design. You don t need a 5 cent Euro Coin as the machine comes with already pressed coins. Designs all have a dotted border:
1. (V) Marionette knight with 'Welt Der Marionetten, Festung Hohensalzburg'.
2. (V) Marionette of Papageno from the Magic Flute with 'Welt Der Marionetten, Festung Hohensalzburg'.
Machine 4 is at the bottom of the stairs by the belfry (on the other end of the castle from the gift shop). If you take a left on leaving the cable car, you can't miss it. Cost to press: a Euro and a 5 cent Eurocent (€1,05) for each design. Designs all have a dotted border:
1. (V) Knight on a horse with flag of Salzburg with 'Festung Hohensalzbjurg'.
2. (V) The Festungsbahn funicular in front of the Fortress with 'Salzburg Festungsbahn'.
3. (H) Residenzplatz and the Residenz fountain with 'Festung Hohensalzbjurg'.
Machine 5 is next to the entrance for the ascent of the funicular. Cost to press: 2 Euro and a 5 Euro Cent coin (2,05€) for each design. Designs all have a dotted border:
1. (V) Mozart with a violin.
