Bonneville Lock & Dam, built and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was the first federal lock and dam on the Columbia and Snake rivers. The project’s first powerhouse, spillway and original navigation lock were completed in 1938 to improve navigation on Columbia River and provide hydropower to the Pacific Northwest. A second powerhouse was completed in 1981, and a larger navigation lock in 1993. Take Interstate 84 to exit 40 or Washington State Highway 14 to milepost 40. The Bridge of the Gods, located about two miles upstream of the dam, provides public access between Oregon and Washington.

Hours of operation: Daily 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
The penny book is for sale in the gift shop for $5.50 (no sales tax in Oregon).
Plenty of free parking.

Although you take the same exit off of I-84 (Exit 40), this is a completely different location than the Bonneville Fish Hatchery Gift Shop. Do be aware that you security may need to conduct a brief vehicle inspection to check for items illegal on federal property, such as firearms.
