Kreuzherrengasse 1 Vienna (Wien), Austria, 1040 Phone: +43 1 5046187 Website In 1713 a final plague epidemic raged across Vienna. To his credit, the Emperor at the time (Charles VI) stayed in town. Given the circumstances, he was also determined to build a church to honor St. Charles Borromeo (1538-1584). As the Archbishop of Milan Italy, St. Charles Borromeo comforted the people of Milan during the plague that struck Milan in the 1570s. As such, Saint Charles is often referred to as the patron saint of plague sufferers. Karlskirche (St. Charles Church) was opened in 1737. The striking sacred building, with its powerful dome, is one of the most important Baroque structures in Vienna. A lift (elevator) goes up to the dome so that visitors can get a close look at the famous Rottmayr frescoes.
