Schlossberg 47 St. Goar (Sankt Goar), Germany, 56329 Phone: +49 6741 7753 Website Built in 1245 by Count Diether von Katzenelnbogen in St. Goar, the Rheinfels is today one of the largest castle and fortress ruins on the Middle Rhine. Under the Counts of Hesse, expanded into a Renaissance castle and later expanded into an extensive fortress, Rheinfels swings towards the most important places on the Middle Rhine. As one of the few strongholds on the Rhine, it was unsuccessfully besieged and not destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and the Palatinate War of Succession.
Hours of operation: March through September: Monday through Sunday 09.00 (9:00 am) to 18.00 (6:00 pm) last admission 17.00 (5:00 pm). October: Monday through Sunday 09.00 (9:00 am) to 17.00 (5:00 pm) last admission 16.00 (4:00 pm). November to the end of February (weather permitting) Friday through Sunday 10.00 (10:00 am) to 15.00 (3:00 pm) last admission 14.00 (2:00 pm). The castle remains closed on snow and ice days.
