11 North 4th Street St. Louis, MO , 63102-1810 Phone: (314) 655-1600 Website The Gateway Arch National Park (formerly Jefferson National Expansion Memorial) is the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition The memorial and park was established to commemorate the Louisiana Purchase, and the subsequent westward movement of American explorers and pioneers, the first civil government west of the Mississippi River, and the debate over slavery raised by the Dred Scott case. The Park and Memorial consists of a 91-acre park along the Mississippi River on the site of the earliest buildings of St. Louis; the Old Courthouse (a former state and federal courthouse that saw the origins of the Dred Scott case), the 45,000 square foot Museum of Westward Expansion and most notably, the Gateway Arch, an inverted steel catenary arch that has become the definitive icon of the city.
Hours of operation: Summer: (Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend) Monday through Sunday 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. Winter: Monday through Sunday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. A Gateway Arch National Park penny book and an America the Beautiful Collectable Token Album are for sale for $4.95 each at the cash register (Gateway Arch National Park gift shop does not charge local State sales tax). Nearby parking is very difficult to find.
Admission: An entrance pass is not required to access Gateway Arch National Park. If you wish to browse in the Museum and Visitor Center, there is no entrance fee. A $3.00 fee is charged to ride the trams up the Arch.
Machine 1 is back by the fudge counter in the far left corner of the gift shop. Cost to press: $1.00 each design (dollar bills only; no quarters accepted). No pennies required. This is a new type PennyCollector machine that accepts a $1.00 bill for each design, or a credit card for a $4.00 charge for all four designs only and after hand cranking, presses a pre-loaded zinc penny.
