The San Francisco Zoo (Originally named the Fleishhacker Zoo after its founder) is a 100-acre zoo located in the southwestern corner of San Francisco between Lake Merced and the Pacific Ocean along the Great Highway. The zoo's main entrance is to the west on the ocean side of the zoo off of the Great Highway.
This zoo is the birthplace of Koko the Gorilla and housed 693 individual animals representing about 197 species as of 2011.

There are 8, 4 penny machines through out the Zoo and a 4 design and a 2 design Token machines. Machine 20, 22 and the Token machine are near the Customer Service office just inside the Main Entrance of the Zoo before the ticket booth and can be reached without paying admission. The others require admission to get to.

Machine 13 - 2009 - Near the Little Puffer Station, Designs are;
1) Logo with Tree, Lion, Giraffe, Deer and Ape, 2) Grizzley Gulch, 3) African lion, 4) San Francisco Garter Snake. Machine 14 - 2009 - At Entrance By Guest services, designs are;
1) (Cat w/ fish in mouth, 2) Giraffe, 3) Ostridge, 4) Tiger.

Machine 19 - 2011 - Back in Grizzly Bear lookout in Grizzly Gulch, designs are:
1) Chimpanzee, 2) Flamingo, 3) Grizzly Gulch, 4) Black & White ruffed Lemur.

Machine 20 - 2012 - At Entrance By Guest Services, designs are:
1) Eagle, 2) Seal, 3) Scorpion, 4) Tiger.

Machine 22 - 2014 - Near the Customer Service office just inside the Main Entrance. Designs are:
1) Koala, 2) Komodo Dragon, 3) Magellanic Penguin, 4) Tiger.

Machine 24: (2021) Is a four design machine that takes dollar bills and is pre-loaded with circulated pennies. Most zinc but some copper abound. All have 'San Francisco Zoo' on them.
1) 2023 Wolf howling at Moon, 2) 'Tapir', standing facing right, 3) Tarantula facing forward with tail up, 4) 'Ring Tail Lemur', facing right with tail up

Token machine 1 Designs are:
1) Standing Tiger, 2) Giraffe.

Token machine 2 (2016) is near Customer Service office just inside Main Entrance.
1) Gorilla,on all four facing forward, 2) Red Panda, 3) Magellanic Penguin, 4) Sumatran Tiger.

12/16: San Francisco Zoo has a new token machine with 4 designs. They are $5.00 each or 3 for $10. (1/04/17: The office charged me $3 each!)
The token machine (designs same as pictured) takes only cash, no credit cards. GSY
