Originally called the Husky Tower, it was conceived as a joint venture between Marathon Realty Company Limited and Husky Oil as part of an urban renewal plan and to celebrate Canada's centennial of 1967. The tower was built at a cost of $3,500,000 and weighs approximately 10,900 tonnes, of which 60% is below ground. It opened to the public on June 30, 1968 as the tallest structure in Calgary, and the tallest in Canada outside of Toronto. It was renamed the Calgary Tower in 1971. The building was a founding member of the World Federation of Great Towers.
Hours of operation: Daily 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.
Use the Convention Centre Parkade parking garage (727 1 Street SE) if you can't find on-street parking.
You do not have to pay admission to access the penny machines or the token machine behind the ticket counter area on the ground floor. The two token designs are exactly the same.. Also, if you are eating at the Revolving Restaurant, you don't have to pay regular admission, just let them know at the ticket counter.
It is illegal to press Canadian coins. The cost to press each design is one loonie ($1 Canadian coin). The gift shop will gladly give you loonies for your paper Canadian money. There is a Lucite box of shiny American zinc pennies on the wall between the two penny machines. Bring your own American 95% copper pennies to use if you don't want to use a zinc penny.
