Fossilized fishes, insects, plants, reptiles, birds, and mammals are exceptional for their abundance, variety, and detail of preservation. Most remarkable is the story they tell of ancient life in the warm, wet environment in and around a freshwater lake. <p> Penny machine only takes a penny. They have a sign on the machine about why it is free but they are asking for donations to purchase fossils. <p> The machine is in the visitor center. All designs have 'Fossil Butte National Monument' on them.
