Catawba Science Center Machine Locations > North Carolina

243 3rd Ave. NE
Hickory, NC , 28603

Phone: 828-322-8169 ext. 6

Exit 125 from Interstate I-40.

The building is an old High School brick building. If searching on Google, the location called "Salt Block Foundation" is exactly the building you want to go to, and is right on top of the entrance that you will want to use to find the machine the quickest.

You can park in either the small half-loop parking lot off of 3rd Ave NE or in the parallel parking on 3rd Ard Ave NE, both of which are free. Once parked, enter the large brick building in the middle set of doors labeled "Arts & Science Center" above the archway. The machine was located across from the gift shop on the left.

There are at least two shops inside, so it can be confusing. You want to go towards the gift shop that will be on your left when you enter, then once you are facing that gift shop, take a few steps towards it and you will see the machine hidden behind a large column on your right.

Hours: Wed-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat. 10am-4pm, Sun. 1pm-4pm, Closed on Mondays & Tuesdays

Machine 2: All designs have the 'Catawba Science Center' logo on them. $1 each, cash or credit card, pre-loaded penny, hand crank. Designs are:
1) Alligator and Turtle,
2) Stingray, Seahorse, and Shark,
3) Microscope, Atom, and 3D molecule,
4) Rocket Ship flying through space with Stars and a Planet.

Retired 1: 1) 'Catawba Science Center Hickory, NC', Alligator.

7/11/24: Machine 2 is here and is in great working order! Pennies come out beautifully. Each design costs $1.
The machine takes cash (1 dollar bills) or Credit/ Debit cards. If you use Debit/Credit, I believe you will be charged $4 and receive all 4 designs. No need to bring your own penny here, but you do still select which design via crank, and crank by hand to press!
You do not need to pay a fee or purchase a ticket to use the machine.
