The 14-foot Lumberman’s Monument stands on a high bank with the Au Sable River providing a scenic backdrop.<br> Learn about the industry that helped develop northern Michigan and the men who cut the timber that helped build a nation. Climb through a log jam, use a peavey, cut a wooden cookie with a cross-cut saw, and learn about the life of a lumberjack through video and displays. Hike the stairway down to the wanigan, a loggers floating kitchen, or take the short trail to the dune observation deck. Enjoy a Kid’s Day program or take a guided nature hike. <p> Located in a log cabin exhibit near the visitor center. Designs are: <br> 1) The Lumberman's Monument statue, <br> 2) River Road Scenic Byway, <br> 3) Huron-Manistee National Forests, MI <p> 3/08/23: The machine has moved to the Desis Family Dining Restaurant in Oscoda. <p> 6/19/2024 Machine IS located at the monument seasonally and will return to Desi's in the off-season. The Visitor Center does begin locking up the buildings about an hour before the closing time listed by Google. The building with the press was locked, but the staff does have a bowl of pennies that fall into the machine and I was able to obtain a set that way.
