26801 Ortega Hwy San Juan Capistrano, CA , 92675 Website Mission San Juan Capistrano is the seventh mission of the 21 missions the Spanish established in California. It is known as the "Jewel" of the Missions. It has been the home to many people over 230 years of history starting in 1775 when Mission San Juan Capistrano was first founded by Father Lasuen. It was abandoned after a few weeks and refounded by Father Serra (1713-1784) on November 1, 1776. Its history consists of memories and stories of its past inhabitants and present visitors. It is a place of historical, cultural, and religious significance, as well as a place of inspiration and education. This Historic Chapel is now a living Landmark and Museum.
The four bells from the bell tower were salvaged from the wreckage and the bell wall or campanario was errected to hang the bells. The present-day parish church is Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano. The parish church is located just northwest of Mission San Juan Capistrano.
The mission is known for its annual welcoming of the swallows returning to the mission to live and nest in the eaves of the mission's buildings.
