It is the seat of the diocese of Ghent. It is named for Saint Bavo of Ghent.
The cathedral is noted for the Ghent Altar piece known as: The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by Hubert and Jan van Eyck. This work is considered Van Eyck's masterpiece and one of the most important works of the early Northern Renaissance, as well as one of the greatest artistic masterpieces of Belgium.The Van Eyck brothers painted the "Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" altarpiece.
Hours of operation: Winter hours (November 1 through March 30) daily 8:30 (8:30 am) to 17:00 (5:00 pm). Summer hours (April 1 through October 31) daily 8:30 (8:30 am) to 18:00 (6:00 pm). The chapel of the "Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" has its own schedule. Summer hours 9:30 (9:30 am) to 17:00 (5:00 pm). Winter hours 10:30 (10:30 am) to 16:00 (4:000 pm). On Sunday, the chapel opens at 13:00 (1:00 pm). Closed January 1. Admission: € 4: Basic rate, € 3 for groups of 15 or more, € 1,50: Youth (8-12), Free under 7, for companions of disabled persons, and with the CItyCard Gent.
There is no parking on-site.
The token machine is located inside the cathedral next to the entrance to the gift shop. Admission required. Tokens are 2€ a piece (A 2€ coin or two 1€ coins only).
