It was opened in 1931 with the goal to "advance the study of zoology, protect wildlife, and educate the public" in the district of Troja in the north of Prague. In 2013, the Zoo occupied a total of 140 acres with 110 acres in use for exhibits and housed about 4,200 animals that represented almost 650 species. This includes 132 species listed as threatened.
There are six token machines located around the zoo, none of them accessible without admission. Each machine dispenses two different tokens, each featuring a different animal. The machines, which do not return change, require either 30 koruna or 1.5 euro, payable with any koruna coin or the 1 and 0.5 euro coins.

Token Machine 1 is located at the southwest corner of the Education Center close to the main entrance.

Token Machine 5 is located on the south wall of the souvenir shop at the base of the chairlift.
