It was opened in September 1963 as a way of getting from the floor of the Coachella Valley to relatively near the top of San Jacinto Peak and was constructed in rugged Chino Canyon. Before its construction, the only way to the top of the mountain was to hike a number of hours from Idyllwild.

Both machines have been converted to $1 bill zinc machines.

2/21/24: Machine 7 is on the "landing" level of the upper station and takes only dollar bills.
Machine 8 takes both credit cards and dollar bills (the credit card reader was not working when we went, had an out of order sign), but the dollar feeder was working.
