That locomotive was stolen in 1862 by Union raiders in an attempt to sabotage key railroad tracks and telegraph communications between Atlanta, Georgia, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. The locomotive was hijacked at the site of the current museum, and the military operation was chronicled in the Disney movie "The Great Locomotive Chase" as well as Buster Keaton's silent film "The General." ~jnm
The 1-die machine is in the gift shop next to the register. The gift shop also sells passport-style penny books for collectors. Design: steam engine with "The Famous General / Kennesaw (Big Shanty) GA."
If you ask at the ticket booth, you can get in to the Gift Shop without a ticket (adult admission is normally $7.50). Parking is free.
01/19/23: Machine is in the corner inside the gift shop about 1/2 way in as they have another room. No need to pay admission to go to the gift shop. Rolling fine on copper. JLT |
