Scotty's Castle Visitors Center burned down two months ago, delaying the re-opening of the Castle. The new re-opening date will be sometime in late 2025 (Update 2023).
2/06/2020: Machine moved to the Furnace Creek Visitor Center.
12/19/15: When storms in October 2015 buried the Scotty's Castle area in mud and necessitated its closure, the penny machine was moved from here to the Furnace Creek Visitor Center, where it will remain until repairs are completed and Scotty's Castle re-opens. The Visitor Center is located at the north edge of the Furnace Creek Ranch resort area, adjacent to the Furnace Creek Campground on Airport Road.
Scotty's Castle (also known as Death Valley Ranch) is a two-story Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival style villa located in the Grapevine Mountains of northern Death Valley. "Scotty's Castle" is named for gold prospector Walter E. Scott, although Scott never owned it, nor is it an actual castle. The visitor center is located in the Furnace Creek resort area on California Highway 190. Furnace Creek is 30 miles from Death Valley Junction and 24 miles from Stovepipe Wells Village.
The penny machine is located to the left at the far side of the shop after entry into the visitors center. The visitors center is open daily 9:45 am to 3:45 pm. Plenty of free parking. You do not have to pay for a tour to access the machine, although the tours are HIGHLY recommended. Visit the website for times and prices for tours. The entrance fee into Death Valley National Park is $10 for 7 days for an individual and $20 per carload for 7 days. There is no entrance fee into the National Parks on January 19: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, February 14-16: Presidents Day weekend, April 18-19: opening weekend of National Park Week, August 25: National Park Service Birthday, September 26: National Public Lands Day, and November 11: Veterans Day.
