5801 Wilshire Boulevard Los Angeles - La Brea, CA , 90036-4539 Phone: (213) 763-349 Website The La Brea Tar Pits are a cluster of tar pits, around which, Hancock Park was formed, in the urban heart of Los Angeles. Asphaltum or tar (brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years. The tar is often covered with dust, leaves, or water. Over many centuries, animals that were trapped in the tar were preserved as bones. The George C. Page Museum is dedicated to researching the tar pits and displaying specimens from the animals that died there.
Hours of operation: Daily 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Closed Independence Day (July 4), Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday of November), Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year's Day (January 1). You must pay admission to access the penny machines. Admission: $14 online or $15 at the museum. That's per adult admission for just the Museum (well worth it). Museum entrance is free on various days. Check the website. Admission is half-price for the last 30 minutes before closing.
Plenty of parking for $15 per car within the parking lot. If you choose street parking, please read all parking signs carefully, as restrictions apply.
Most importantly, do not park along Wilshire Boulevard between the hours of 7-9 am and 4-7 pm (Monday - Friday), or your car will be ticketed and towed. This applies even if you are parked at a meter.
