It is a place where scientific research on the Commonwealth of Virginia's natural history and public understanding merge. Exhibits, educational programs for all ages, and publications translate the Museum curators' scientific research into well-understood language and tangible concepts.
The museum has several different award winning publications, is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, and has more than 10 million items in its collections. This includes the first-ever intact Stromatolite head found in Virginia, and is one of the largest complete 'heads' in the world, at over 5 feet in diameter and weighing over 2 tons.
