Website

The Kon-Tiki Museum is a museum in the Bygdøy peninsula in Oslo. It houses vessels and maps from the Kon-Tiki expedition, as well as a library with about 8000 books. The museum was originally built to house the Kon-Tiki, a raft of balsa wood of pre-Columbian model that Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl used to sail from Peru to Polynesia in 1947. Another boat in the museum is the Ra II, a vessel built of reeds according to Heyerdahl's perception of an ancient Egyptian seagoing boat. Heyerdahl sailed the Ra II from North Africa to the Caribbean after a previous attempt with the reed boat Ra failed.

Hours of operation: November through February 10.00 (10:00 am) to 17.00 (5:00 pm), March through May 10.00 (10:00 am) to 17.00 (5:00 pm), June through August 09.30 (9:30 am) to 18.00 (6:00 pm), September through October 10.00 (10:00 am) to 17.00 (5:00 pm). Bus parking only.
Admission is in Norwegian Kroner. You do not have to pay admission to access the machine. Adults 140 ($13.15), Senior 100 ($9.39), Student 50 ($4.70), Children [6 - 15] 50 ($4.70).

NOTICE: Unless you come prepared, you will have to buy 10-krone coins and the copper blanks from the cashier to press (they'll let you charge these with your admission). The machine is set up to press a 50-øre coin. This coin was discontinued in 2011 and is no longer in circulation. The cashier will have the copper blanks to press. A 2¢ euro coin will work in lieu of a 50-øre coin. American coins WILL NOT work in this machine.

Machine 1 is in the souvenir shop to the right of the entrance/exit. Cost to press: 10-krone coin (94¢) and a 50-øre substitute coin for each design. Designs all have a beaded border with 'Kon-Tiki Museet':

2. (V) The Ra II sailing vessel with 'Ra II 1970'.
3. (V) An Easter Island Maoi statue with 'Easter Island 55/56'.
