The Mt. St. Helens Forest Learning Center is located inside the blast zone of the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens on Highway 504. It is a partnership between Weyerhaeuser Company, Washington State Department of Transportation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The Visitor Center is open to the public free of charge. Walk through a life-like forest and experience the Eruption Chamber. Learn about forest recovery, reforestation and conservation of forest resources. From I-5 take Exit 49 to Highway 504 (Spirit Lake Memorial Highway) and continue east to Milepost 33.

Exhibits hours of operation: Monday through Sunday May 18 to October 1 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Gift shop, elk viewing, trails and play area hours of operation: Monday through Sunday Mid-May to October. From 10:00 am to 6:00 pm through September and from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in October.
Admission is FREE.
The gift shop staff is happy to make change. The gift shop sells a penny book for $7.99 plus tax.
Plenty of free parking.

There are now four penny machines located in the Mount St. Helens area. One at Mount St. Helens Visitor Center at Silver Lake, one at Forest Learning Center, and two at Johnston Ridge. The two machines at Johnston Ridge are the only ones that require an admission fee to access.

Machine 1 is in the entry lobby before the gift shop. Cost to press: 76¢ per design. If you don't line the arrows up just right, you won't get the design you selected. Designs are:

2. (H) Harry Truman wearing a baseball hat with 'Your Spirit Lives Harry Truman'.
3. (H) Mt. St. Helens erupting with 'Mt. St. Helen's Eruption May 18th, 1980'.
4. (H) The Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center with 'Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center'. (The 4th design in this 4 penny machine has been taped over. The penny machine is still pressing this design.).
